GENERAL INFORMATION
Lucinda Ann was born 28 June 1843 Burrell Township, Armstrong County, PA, the daughter of John Knappenberger (1809-1885) and Anna Marie HILL (1808-1871). Lucinda died27 December 1929 in Armstrong County, PA. She married Josiah Wylie Whitmer KLINGENSMITH, son of Adam G. Klingensmith and Anna Mary Kirkland, on 22 February 1866 in Armstrong County, PA. Josiah was born 20 June 1841 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 7 November 1912 in Armstrong County, PA. This couple is buried at Forks Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gilpin Township, Armstrong County, PA. They had eight children.
Josiah Klingensmith fought in the Civil War in the 139th Regiment, Company C of the Pennsylvania Volunteers for three years. He enlisted in September 1862. He fought in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. He was wounded in the left hand on 5 May 1864 and was discharged on account of disability on 24 December 1864. Josiah never recovered the use of his left hand. He was a boatman on the Pennsylvania Canal, store owner and postmaster in Dime, PA as well as a farmer. At the time of his death, he owned 13 farms including the old Klingensmith and Knappenberger homesteads.

MARY ANN KLINGENSMITH (1867-1911)
Mary Ann Klingensmith born 10 April 1867 in Armstrong County, PA and died 21 October 1911 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA. Mary was a principal in a high school in Armstrong County, PA. She married Rev. William M. AYERS who was born 8 March 1862 in Canada and died 28 January 1937. This couple is buried in Forks Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. They had two children.
1. William W. Ayers was born 3 March 1908 and died 16 April 1910 in Armstrong County, PA.
He is buried at Forks Zion Church Cemetery with his parents.
2. Mary “Lucille” Ayers was born 18 October 1910 in Canada (according to the 1930 census) and died 12 April 2001 in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. She married Frank M. MONTGOMERY on 27 June 1934. Frank was born 18 November 1910 and died 12 June 1994 in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. Lucille was an infant when her mother died in 1911. She later went to live with her aunt, Nancy Isabel Klingensmith Boarts, in Imperial County, California. In the 1930 census, she was living with them at the age of 19 and single.
JOHN A. KLINGENSMITH (1868-1961)
John A. Klingensmith born 22 November 1868 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 27 July 1961 in Armstrong County, PA. He married Lavina Lucinda BROWN, daughter of Samuel and Anna Brown, on 16 October 1890. Lavina was born 5 May 1866 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 9 September 1949 in Armstrong County, PA. This couple is buried in St. Michael’s Lutheran Church Cemetery (Brick Church) in Armstrong County, PA. John ran a peddler’s wagon for 14 years from 1885 to 1899, then worked in the gas fields and ran a general store in Dime, PA, and acted as postmaster at Mateer, PA. This couple had seven children.
1. Grace Martha Klingensmith was born 27 October 1891 in Armstrong County, PA and died 1 November 1981 in Armstrong County, PA. Grace married Howard Samuel SMELTZER, son of Henry Samuel Smeltzer and Lavina Rearick, on 29 April 1909. Howard was born 6 October 1885 in Armstrong County, PA and died 31 December 1962 in Armstrong County, PA. They are buried in St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. This couple had 10 children: Infant (19 December 1909-30 December 1909), Russell Alvin Smeltzer (25 October 1910-21 February 1998), Ira Lester Smeltzer (11 October 1912-11 February 2007), Kenneth B. Smeltzer (13 November 1914-15 May 1992), Raymond Daye Smeltzer, Sr. (19 May 1917-31 May 1992), Ruth L. Smeltzer (born 1919), Iva M. Smeltzer (20 December 1921 – 22 November 1999), Lucy V. Smeltzer (14 June 1924-12 September 1998), John S. Smeltzer (born 1927) and Charles W. Smeltzer (born 1932).
2. Sarah Lucinda Klingensmith was born 26 May 1893 in Armstrong County, PA and died 2 July 1893 in Armstrong County, PA. She is buried with her parents.
3. Ruth Hannah Klingensmith was born 30 April 1894 in Armstrong County and died in Trumbull County, Ohio on 4 January 1973 in Trumbull County, Ohio. She married Ronald Lucine SCHALL, son of Joseph Schall and Margaret Smeltzer, on 23 January 1924. Ronald was born 28 October 1899 in Armstrong County, PA and died 26 July 1985 in Trumbull County, Ohio. This couple had 4 children: Lena May (1 February 1925-14 August 2004), LaRue (born 1929), E. Fred (17 November 1932-2 January 2003) and Verna I (3 December 1936-2 August 2004). Ruth and Ronald are buried in Pine Knoll Cemetery, Leavittsburg, Ohio.
4. Rosena May Klingensmith was born 3 April 1896 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 26 December 1978 in Allegheny County, PA. She is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo, PA. She married Merle Calvin ROSENSTEEL on 9 March 1917. Merle was born 30 March 1894 and died December 1983 in Westmoreland County, PA. This couple had four children: Hulda May (5 June 1917-27 July 1977), Ellis Merle (born 1922), Stanley Owen (27 February 1924-26 July 2005) and Ethel Jean (born 1925).
5. Bessie “Cevilla” Klingensmith was born 14 March 1898 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 23 May 1987 in Armstrong County, PA Cevilla married Paul J. KING on 5 September 1916. Paul was born 30 May 1894 and died 5 September 1975. This couple is buried in St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. This couple had 3 children: Homer Sylvester King (3 June 1917-6 April 1985), Harold Clair King (16 January 1919-12 June 1996) and Howard Paul King (21 February 1923-4 May 2006).
6. Infant Son Klingensmith was born 10 August 1900 in Armstrong County, PA and died 10 August 1900 buried in St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. The grave marker reads “Our Baby Boy Son of J.A. & L. Klingensmith”.
7. Ossie Margaret Klingensmith was born 9 March 1903 in Armstrong County, PA and died 10 July 1903. She is buried next to her parents.
WILLIAM FRANTZ KLINGENSMITH (1871-1946)
William Frantz “Frank” Klingensmith born 1 March 1871 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 31 August 1946 in Armstrong County, PA. William ran his father’s store at Dime, PA. He married Vivian ELLIOTT, daughter of Dr. Addison J. and Sarah Malinda Elliott, in 1894. Vivian was born 11 November 1874 in Butler County, PA and died 8 November 1944 in Orchard Park, New York. They had two children. William Frantz Klingensmith later married Dora WINGARD CLAYPOOL, who was a widow. Dora was the daughter of Harry J. Wingard and Olive E. Sheckler. She was born June 1877 in Jefferson County, PA and died 11 August 1948 in Armstrong County, PA. She is buried Homewood Baptist Church Cemetery, Ford City, Armstrong County, PA.
1. Paul Frantz Klingensmith was born 28 October 1895 in Armstrong County, PA and died 12 April 1962 in Westmoreland County, PA. He married Myra A. RIGGLE, daughter of Miles Austin Riggle and Emma Spencer, on 6 June 1914. Myrna was born 11 September 1895 in Armstrong County, PA and died 2 March 1972 in Armstrong County, PA. They are buried in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo, PA. They had 3 children.
a. Helen Jeanne Klingensmith was born 7 February 1915 in Armstrong County, PA and died 29 September 2003 in Wayne County, North Caolina. She married Clair L. KINTER on 25 June 1933. Clair was born 28 July 1910 and died March 1985 in Orchard Park, Erie County, New York. They had a son and daughter.
b. Donald C. Klingensmith was born 29 April 1917 in Armstrong County, PA and died 23 July 1992 in Indiana County, PA. He married Mildred STANLEY, daughter of William E. Stanley and Olive Tyger, on 25 December 1937. Mildred was born 5 March 1920 in Indiana County, PA and died 18 November 1984 in Westmoreland County, PA. They are buried in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo, PA. They had three sons.
c. Merle A. Klingensmith was born 10 February 1921 in Armstrong County, PA and died 6 May 1942 in a motorcycle accident.
2. Marion Klingensmith was born 5 September 1897 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 7 January 1983 in Denver, Colorado. Marion married Rev. Wallace “Guy” SMELTZER, son of Albert Augustus Smeltzer and Millie G. Eckman, on 12 June 1922 in Armstrong County, PA. Guy was born on 11 March 1900 in Armstrong County, PA and died 27 September 1984 in Montrose, Colorado. Rev. Smeltzer was a Methodist minister and wrote the book entitled “Methodism in Western Pennsylvania 1784-1968”. They are buried in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo, Armstrong County, PA. They had two children.
a. Rev. Richard E. Smeltzer who married Delores VICE on 7 July 1920.
b. Rev. Lois J. Smetlzer who married Ralph Albert SHUGART, son of Ralph Shugart and Bena Middleton, on 30 June 1953. Ralph was born 4 December 1928 in Eddy County, New Mexico and died November 1975 in San Diego County, California.
NANCY ISABEL KLINGENSMITH (1873-1951)
Nancy Isabel Klingensmith known as “Nannie B.” was born 18 March 1873 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 7 February 1951 in Imperial County, California. She married Charles F. BOARTS, son of Fredrick Boarts and Sarah J. Marsh, about 1902. He was born 13 February 1871 in Armstrong County, PA and died 13 March 1958 in Imperial County, California. This couple ranched in Brawley, Imperial County, California. They had no children but raised their niece, M. Lucille Ayers. Nannie B. was a graduate of Indiana County PA Normal School/Class of 1897.
SUSANNA MARTHA KLINGENSMITH (1875-1971)
Susanna Martha Klingensmith known as “Susie” was born 30 May 1875 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 9 April 1971 in Armstrong County, PA. She married Harry Elmer GILCHRIST, son of John Gilchrist and Susanna Jack, on 30 August 1900. Harry was a widower at the time of his marriage to Susie. Harry was born 14 August 1867 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 9 April 1951. This couple is buried in St. Michael’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Harry was an educator, a farmer, and a justice of the peace. They had six children.
1. Lucy Margaret Gilchrist was born 2 July 1901 in Armstrong County, PA and died 25 July 1992 in Allegheny County, PA. Lucy married Carl Lawrence GRAHAM on 22 September 1939. Carl was born 25 November 1903 and died 24 August 1978 in Westmoreland County, PA. They are buried in Forks Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
2. Louisa Blanche Gilchrist known as “Blanche” was born 7 May 1904 and died 17 June 1972 in Armstrong County, PA. Blanche married Marlin Thomas FOUSE, Sr. who was born 19 February 1880 in Armstrong County, PA and died November 1956 in Allegheny County, PA. This couple had six children.
3. Frances Elmo Gilchrist was born 2 February 1908 and died 29 December 1994 in Bucks County, PA. Frances married Clarence E. WILSON known as “Doc” on 2 July 1934. He was born 26 March 1911 and died 10 June 2000 in Bucks County, PA. They had one daughter.
4. Myrna Isabelle Gilchrist known as “Isabel” was born 20 April 1910 in Armstrong County, PA and died 24 July 1981 in Los Angeles County, California. Isabel married Paul B. MARTIN on 2 July 1934. Paul was born 30 April 1908 in PA and died 23 February 1985 in Los Angeles County, California. They had two children.
5. Nellie Mae “Gillie” Gilchrist was born 20 May 1913 in Armstrong County, PA and died 24 October 2006 in Allegheny County, PA. She married Robert S. RUSIEWICZ, son of William W. Rusiewicz and Agnes F. Jagodzinski, on 15 November 1941. Robert was born 23 January 1912 in Allegheny County, PA and died 4 May 1993 in Westmoreland County, PA. They had a son and a daughter.
6. Virginia Fay Gilchrist was born 11 December 1919 in Armstrong County, PA and died 25 November 2000 in Simi Valley, Ventura County, California. She married James Edward TREECE on 2 July 1937. James was born 20 October 1916 in PA and died October 1984 in Ventura County, California. This couple had a son.
OLIVE L. KLINGENSMITH (1877-1965)
Olive L. Klingensmith known as “Ollie” was born 12 August 1877 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 24 June 1965 in Armstrong County, PA. Olive married Harry A. LAFFERTY, son of James Lafferty, about 1898. Harry was born 4 January 1872 in PA and died 12 November 1963 in Armstrong County, PA . This couple is buried in Spring Church Cemetery, Armstrong County, PA. They had three children.
1. Cleason R. Lafferty was born 24 April 1899 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 17 April 1988 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. He married Jessie Virginia HENRY who was born in 1908 and died 1968. They are buried in Spring Church Cemetery, Armstrong County, PA. They had three children.
2. Gaylord W. Lafferty was born 6 October 1901 in Armstrong County, PA and died 21 January 1968 in Westmoreland County, PA. Gaylord married Hazel M. BIERS, daughter of Lewis Bier and Nora Hannah Waltenbaugh, on 2 December 1925. Hazel was born 3 April 1906 and died 4 April 1998 in Armstrong County, PA. They are buried in Spring Church Cemetery. They had three children.
3. Vera Isabell Lafferty was born 7 January 1906 in Armstrong County, PA and died 31 July 1998 in Indiana County, PA. She married Herman J. WILSON, son of Josh Wilson and Mary Randel, about 1923. Herman was born 1895 in Pennsylvania and died 15 November 1960 in Indiana County, PA. They ares buried in Elders Ridge Cemetery, Armstrong County, PA.
JOSIAH WYLIE KLINGENSMITH (1884-1910)
Josiah Wylie Klingensmith known as “Wylie” was born 25 June 1884 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA and died 21 November 1910 in Armstrong County, PA. He married Nellie Blanche RIGGLE, daughter of David D. Riggle and Lillia A. Lafferty, on 18 April 1907. Nellie was born 20 June 1889 in Armstrong County, PA and died 11 May 1969. They had one child. This couple is buried in Forks Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Wylie died in a boiler explosion, and it seems his wife, Nellie, married again to J. Worth Schall.
1. Lucinda Klingensmith known as “Lucy” was born one week after her father’s death. Lucy was born 28 November 1910 in Armstrong County and died 28 February 2006 in Washington Township, Westmoreland County, PA. She married Clair N. GARTLEY, son of Boyd and Mary Gartley, on 23 July 1937. Clair was born 25 August 1914 in Armstrong County, PA and died 23 January 1966. This couple is buried in Forks Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. They had one daughter.
SARAH MYRNA KLINGENSMITH (1890-1982)
Sarah Myrna Klingensmith known as “Myrna” was born 29 August 1890 in Parks Township, Armstrong County, PA. and died 13 September 1982 in State College, PA. She married Frank Alvey RIDDLE, son of Charles R. and Anna B. Riddle, on 22 February 1910. Frank was born 21 November 1887 in Pennsylvania and died 17 August 1972 in Armstrong County, PA. This couple is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Gilpin Township, Armstrong County, PA. This couple had four children.
1. Zoie Irene Riddle was born 7 November 1917 in Armstrong County, PA and died 11 February 1985 in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, PA. She married Chambers A. BOWSER on 7 November 1946. Chambers was born 12 October 1911 and died 15 January 1980 in Armstrong County, PA.
2. Vivian Kathleen Riddle was born 18 May 1921 in Armstrong County, PA and died 18 December 2010 in Volusia County, FL. She married James DYETT, son of James and Margaret Dyett, on 16 January 1936. James was born 20 March 1916 in Dalry, Scotland and died 5 April 1995 in Volusia County, Florida. They are buried at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Volusia County, FL. They had one son: James Alvy Dyett (born 22 May 1937 in Armstrong County, PA and died 29 August 2008 in Volusia County, Florida).
3. Dorothy Jean Riddle was born 31 March 1924 in Armstrong County, PA and died 2 July 1999 in Armstrong County, PA. She married Thomas Russell FAULK, son of Thomas Russell Faulk, Sr. and Grace Ina Fuhs, on 13 June 1941. Thomas was born 4 November 1922 in Westmoreland County, PA and died September 1984 in Westmoreland County, PA. They are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, West Leechburg, Westmoreland County, PA. They had two sons.
4. Everett Edward Riddle was born 1 June 1927 and died 8 June 1927 in Armstrong County, PA. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Leechburg, Armstrong County, PA.
