GENERAL INFORMATION
Anna Maria Knappenberger, daughter of John Knappenberger and granddaughter of Conrad Knappenberger of Westmoreland County, was born 27 September 1808 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 3 December 1891 in Clarion County, PA. She married Joseph DETAR, son of Jacob Detar (original spelling Detarre) and Anna Maria Hagelberger (sometimes written as Huckleberry) on 25 February 1830 in Westmoreland County, PA. Joseph was born 30 October 1808 in Westmoreland County, PA and died 6 June 1885 in Clarion County, PA. Joseph, the eleventh and last child of Jacob and Mary Detar, was only 10 years old when his father died. Most of the Detar family remained in Westmoreland County while Joseph and Anna Maria left there for Venango County (now Clarion County), PA shortly after they married. NOTE: Clarion County was formed in 1839. Joseph and Anna Maria had six children.

David D. Detar was born 3 December 1833 in Washington Township, Venango County (later to become Clarion County), PA and died 10 March 1919 in Clarion County, PA. David married Sarah Jane HOLLIS, daughter of William C and Jane Hollis, on 15 March 1859. She was born 28 April 1839 in Venango County, PA and died 20 January 1911 in Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Dehner Cemetery, Clarion County, PA. David is listed as in the 1900 census as a foundryman and merchant. They had eight children.

1. William Joseph Detar was born 4 April 1860 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA and died 16 December 1921 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. He married Clara C. FRILL, daughter of Jonathan Frill and Eliza McMichael, about 1881. Clara was born 16 November 1862 in Clarion County, PA and died 13 March 1914 in Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Dehner Cemetery, Clarion County, PA. They had six children.
a. LaMerne Detar known as “Myra” was born 18 March 1885 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA and died 11 November 1935 in Franconia, Montgomery County, PA. She was buried in Dehner Cemetery, Fryburg, Clarion County, PA. She married Lawrence Joseph MARBACH, son of John Marbach and Maggie Marbach, who was born on 8 March 1885 in Clarion County, PA and died on 17 January 1937 in Boise, Ada County, Idaho. This marriage ended in divorce. The 1930 census for Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY lists Myrna Marback living with her sister, Pearl. Myra and Lawrence had a daughter: Ruth Marbach (born about December 1909 in Colorado and died 1919).
b. Meda J. Detar was born 28 July 1886 in Clarion County, PA and died 30 December 1940 in Warren County, PA. She seemingly never married. Meda was a patient at the Warren State Hospital from at least 1920 until her death there in 1940. Her diagnosis was Manic Depression Psychosis. She was buried in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA.
c. Nellie C. Detar was born 1 January 1890 in Pennsylvania and died 18 March 1919 in Clarion County, PA. She was buried in Dehner Cemetery, Clarion County, PA.
d. Pearl Arlene Detar was born June 1894 in Pennsylvania. She married George E. ONGLEY, son of Wilber G. Ongley and Emma Stockwell. George was born 27 November 1893 in Crawford County, PA. George worked as director of design in the garment industry. They lived in Niagara County, New York. They had a daughter named Phyllis Arlene Ongley (born 2 April 1920 in New York and died 15 April 2008 in Allegheny County, PA) who married Jay L. McELWAIN (11 November 1920-15 December 1994).
e. David Dewey Detar, Sr., MD was born 15 July 1898 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA and died 12 September 1973 in Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA. He married Emma Elizabeth BURDAN, daughter of Harry and Jennie E. Burdan, on 17 November 1926. Emma was born 14 June 1900 in Pennsylvania and died 18 April 1979 in Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA. They are buried in Pottstown Cemetery, Montgomery County, PA. They had two children:
- David Dewey Detar, Jr. was born in 1929 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA and died on 6 May 2013 in Montgomery County, PA. He was recruited by the United States Military Academy to play football for coaches Vince Lombardi & Colonel Red Blake. David married Katherine Louise “Kitty Lou” SCHMEARER, daughter of Robert Schmearer and Sarah Kurtz.
- Emma Jeanne Detar was born about 1933 in Montgomery County, PA and died before 2013. Emma married a Mr. ANSON.
f. Lee George Detar was born 9 September 1899 in Venango County, PA and died 23 June 1954 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. He was buried in Sunset Hill Memorial Park, Venango County, PA. Lee was a cafe proprietor. He married Julia B. [maiden name unknown] who was born 15 November 1905 in Poland and died 10 December 1994 in Venango County, PA. They had two children: Lee George Detar, Jr. (born 8 October 1926 in Oil City, Venango County, PA), and JoAnna Detar (born about 1929 in Venango County, PA).
2. Mary E. Detar was born 15 December 1863 in Washington Township, Clarion County and died in 1865 in Clarion County, PA.
3. Clemenceau Meade “Clem” Detar, VS was born 2 July 1868 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA and died in 21 June 1943 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA. Clem was a veterinary surgeon. He married Cora Mae KAPP, daughter of George Frederick Kapp and Melissa Jane Seigworth, about 1890. Cora was born 15 June 1870 in Elk Township, Clarion County, PA and died 10 October 1959 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Venus Cemetery in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA. Cora is a sister of Brady Kapp who married Flora Annetta Detar [see below]. Clem and Cora had four children.

a. Ray DeForest Detar (Sr.) was born 2 May 1895 in Clarion County, PA and died 14 July 1963 in PA in Oil City, Venango County, PA. Ray was a funeral director. He married Florence I. BAKER, daughter of Frank M. Baker and Emma E. Miller, about 1921. Florence was born October 1893 in Clarion County, PA and died 9 May 1951 Fryburg, Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Venus Cemetery, Clarion County, PA. They had two children: Ray Deforest Detar, Jr. (22 October 1922 in Clarion County, PA-June 1970 in PA) and Shirley Ann Detar (born 1935) who married in May 1955 to Joseph H. ZACHERL, Jr. (28 June 1932 in Cranberry Township, Venango County, PA-6 September 1985 in Cranberry Township, Venango County, PA).
b. Jessie I. Detar was born 16 January 1899 in Venango County, PA and died 29 March 1979. She married John Alyousis “Jack” LAUER, son of Joseph Lauer, on 8 July 1918. Jack was born 12 June 1897 in Clarion County, PA and died on 8 December 1974 in Clarion County, PA. They had three children: Robert J. “Bob” Lauer (23 October 1919-7 January 1969) who married Jeannette M. KINGLSEY (26 March 1917 in Venango County, PA-3 February 1999 in Erie County, PA), Marion June Lauer (14 December 1922 in Clarion County, PA-September 2009 in New York) who married Theodore Cleanthis “Ted” BENIADES (17 November 1922-24 October 2014) on 28 November 1954, and Earl J. “Bunk” Lauer (13 June 1926-9 March 1969) who married Kathleen EHRHART.

Detar (born 27 September 1931 in Clarion County, PA) who married Barbara L. 4. Carman Yingling Detar, MD known as “Carma” was born 12 September 1870 in Clarion County, PA and died 28 November 1935 in Oil Hill, PA. He was buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City, Venango County, PA. He first married Minerva M. MAHLE, daughter of Jacob Mahle and Elizabeth Greer, on 21 February 1895. She was born 14 June 1872 in Horse Creek Furnace, Venango County, PA and died on 19 January 1918 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. Carman and Minerva had three children. Carman later married Janet [maiden name: HEIVLY] CORNELIUS, daughter of Y.H. Heivly and Elizabeth Yother, on 14 February 1920 in Clarion County, PA. Janet was born 30 June 1889 in Pennsylvania and died 3 July 193 in Oil City, Venango County, PA.
a. Reed Leroy Detar Sr. DDS was born 1 January 1896 in Kelletsville, PA and died 28 January 1977 in New Haven, Connecticut. He married Elizabeth EICHNER who was born 1898 in Oil City, Venango County, PA and died 1964. They had three children: Barbara Detar (born 1925) who married Eugene R. SCHULER (14 September 1924-18 June 1998), Carm Robert Detar (1 August 1929-8 June 1934 at the age of 4 of pneumonia), and Reed L. Detar Jr. (born about 1930).
b. Russell W. Detar was born 16 August 1901 in Kelletsville, PA and died on 27 July 1944 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. Russell married Agnes O. [maiden name unknown] who was born about 1899 in New York. This marriage ended in divorce. They had three children: Francis Detar (born about 1923), Virginia Detar (born about 1927), and Anabelle Detar (born about 1929).
c. Margaret Detar was born 24 May 1905 in Pennsylvania and died January 1974 in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida. She married Harry H. ASHBAUGH who was born 9 June 1905 in Pennsylvania and died 15 March 1988 in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida.
5. Homer James Detar was born 15 February 1872 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA and died 24 February 1948 in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. He married Maude Emma BAKER, daughter of Joseph Clark Baker and Alice P. Dale, on 24 June 1891 in Erie, PA. Maude was born 8 January 1871 in Shippensville, PA and died 23 September 1943 in Buffalo, New York. They are buried in McKean County Memorial Park, Lafayette, McKean County, PA. They had six children.
a. Lela I. Detar was born 14 August 1893 in Venango County, PA and died as an infant.
b. Harry Alvin Detar was born 23 September 1896 in Venango County, PA and died 29 June 1966 in Tonawanda, Erie County, NY. He married Selma STONE, daughter of Gus A. Stone and Tilie Soderhohm, about 1920. Selma was born on 25 February 1898 in Westville, PA and died on 16 December 1933 in Lafayette, McKean County, PA. They had three children: Martha Jane Detar (13 August 1920-24 November 1922), Nancy Lou Detar (born about 1926) who married a Mr. CATALINA, and David Detar (born about 1932).
c. James “Russell” Detar was born 22 May 1901 in Venango County, PA and died 29 October 1980 in Rochester, Monroe County, NY. He was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Brockport, Monroe County, New York. He was first married Uvinza Catherine JONES, daughter of Homer Scott Jones and Jennie Bell King, about 1919. To this marriage was born Homer Elwood Detar who was born 11 May 1920 in McKean county, PA and died 11 Dec 1990 in Erie County, NY. This marriage ended in divorce. Homer Elwood Detar was raised in his maternal grandparents’ household.
He then married Anna JUTKIEWICZ on 11 June 1921 in Albion New York. Anna was born 9 April 1898 in Rochester, New York and died 5 January 1996 in Monroe County, New York. They had three children: Francis Edward “Bud” Detar (6 October 1922-23 November 2008) who in 1942 married Stella Anastasia OSTROWSKI (1 April 1924-7 March 2011), Virginia Detar (born 4 April 1926 – 19 Dec 2018 in Monroe County, NY) who married Peter DIPASQUALE (25 Octo 1929-14 August 2017), and AnnabelleDetar (born 30 September 1928) who married George E. MAMO (24 December 1928 – January 2019).
d. Hollis Detar was born 1 March 1903 in Venango County, PA and died as an infant.
e. Sarah Elizabeth Detar was born 24 May 1906 in Venango County, PA and died 1960. She was a twin of Alice. She married Kenneth Albert NEWTON, son of Fred Newton and Jessie Woodward, about 1926. Kenneth was born on 23 January 1907 in Lafayette Township, McKean County, PA. They had five children: Kenneth Albert Newton, Jr. (born about 1927), Jane G. Newton (born about 1929) who married a Mr. GREENE, Luanne Newton (born about 1931) who married a Mr. SAPNER, Marjorie Newton (born about 1932) who married a Mr. DECKER, and James B. Newton (15 November 1933-23 December 1997).
f. Alice Mae Detar was born 24 May 1906 1906 in Clarion County, PA and died 26 August 1974 in Erie County, PA. She was a twin of Sarah. She was buried in Moody Hollow Cemetery, Eldred, McKean County, PA. Alice married William Charles SHICK, son of Frank C. and Emma Shick. William was born 26 June 1907 in Pennsylvania and died 14 January 1988 in Pennsylvania. They had 3 children: Elizabeth Ann Shick (born about 1927) who married a Mr. KLUG, William D. Shick (12 June 1929-28 August 1974), and Brad Herbert Shick (11 June 1936-22 January 2013) who in 1960 married Patricia Jean BEHRENS and in 1985 married Janet K. MITCHNER.
6. Clarence Mead Detar known as “Clyde” was born 12 July 1875 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA and died 14 December 1932 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. He was buried in Dehner Cemetery, Fryburg, Clarion County, PA. Clyde seems to have never married; he was was single when he died at the age of 57.
7. Perry L. Detar was born 23 March 1880 in Clarion County, PA and died as an infant.
8. Benjamin Earl Detar was born 19 April 1882 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA and died in 13 September 1932 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA. He was buried in Dehner Cemetery, Clarion County, PA. He married Ethel E. REED who was born about 1887 in Pennsylvania and died after 1950. In 1910 this family was living in Oil City, Venango County, PA. They had five children.

e. Paul E. Detar was born 12 October 1920 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio and died 7 October 1998 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Paul married Bertha M. [maiden name unknown] who was born 7 February 1921 and died 13 April 1992 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They are buried in Brooklyn Heights Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.
HANNAH MARY DETAR (1837-1913)
Hannah Mary Detar was born 19 November 1837 in Beaver Township, Venango County (later to become Clarion County) , PA and died 28 December 1913 in Clarion County, PA. She married Samuel Clayton SHEATS, son of Eli Sheatz and Eva Maria Kahl, on 16 February 1864. Samuel was born 9 July 1840 in Venango County, PA and died 17 December 1920 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. He served in the Civil War and received a medical discharge. In the 1880 census for Salem Township, Clarion County, PA, Samuel was listed as a teacher. This couple was living in Oil City, Venango County, PA in the 1910 census. In 1920, Samuel was living as a widower with his youngest daughter, Pearl, and her family. This couple had ten children.

1. William Elsworth Sheats was born 10 February 1865 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA and died 2 September 1943. He married Florence FOX who was born 8 August 1869 and died 27 September 1927 in Venango County, PA. They had a daughter.
a. Vada Sheats was born 8 October 1901 in Venango County, PA and died March 1975 in Oil City, PA. Her first husband was Claude HEALD who was born about 1897 in New York and died in 1958. Vada later married Thomas SHANAHAN who died in 1967. Vada and Claude had three children: Charles W. Heald (1924-1924), Helen R. Heald (born 11 October 1925 – 22 January 2007) who married Charles Howard COZAD, Jr. (24 March 1922-8 July 2000), and Arthur Duane Heald (26 October 1928-27 November 1950) who was in the Korean War and was listed as missing in action.
2. Joseph Ervin Sheats was born June 1866 in Clarion County, PA and moved to Kansas after 1900. Joseph died sometime after the 1930 census. His first wife was Sarah “Sadie” McKISSICK, daughter of A.T. McKissick and Rebecca Culbertson, who was born in February 1862 in Fertigs, Venango County, PA and died in Kansas between 1900 and 1910. Joseph’s second wife was Nellie F. (maiden name unknown) but had been married previously to a Mr. Davenport). Nellie was born about 1886 in Kansas and died after the 1930 census. They had a son,

3. Samuel Sheridan Sheats known as “Sherril” was born 25 December 1868 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 5 November 1960 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. He married Elma Viola FRANK, daughter of George Elias Frank and Clarissa Jane Simmons, on 2 July 1895 in Salamanca, New York. Elma [sometimes written as Alma] was born 19 May 1876 in Venango County, PA and died 10 April 1957 in Venango County, PA. They had five children.
a. Milford Leroy Sheats was born 11 March 1896 in Venango County, PA and died September 1983 in Martin County, Florida. He married Gladys L. DAVIS who was born 21 October 1897 and died December 1972 in Cleveland, Ohio. They had four children: Glen Leroy Sheats (17 Feb1918- 11 December 1993), Melvin D. Sheats (17 February 1920-8 January 1999), Ruth Sheats and Richard Sheats (8 December 1927-22 November 1996).
b. Harold E. Sheats was born 29 November 1897 in Venango County, PA and died January 1969 n Oil City, PA. He married Eva Edna BROWN was born about 1907 in Pennsylvania and died 3 November 1968. They had two daughters named Estella Viola Sheats and Doris S. Sheats and a son named Ronald E. Sheats.
c. Donald E. Sheats was born 15 June 1900 in Venango County, PA and died February 1970 in Chautauqua County, New York. He married Leona [maiden name unknown] who was born 21 November 1902 and died July 1972 in Chautauqua County, New York.
d. George “Clayton” Sheats was born 20 July 1903 in Venango County, PA and died 19 March 1954. He married Alyce WARREN, daughter of John and Anne E. Warren. Alice was born 27 March 1908 in PA and died 18 May 1991.
e. Lena “Ione” Sheats was born 3 July 1906 in Venango County, PA and died 22 June 1997 in Lake County, Ohio. She married Charles ROSS who died in 1981.

4. John “Edward” Sheats was born 6 October 1871 in Clarion County, PA and died 5 April 1951. Edward first married Alice [maiden name unknown] about 1899 in PA. Alice was born in May 1881 in PA. He then married Margie Belle DELOE, daughter of Simon Amos Deloe and Prescilla F. Stover. Margie was born 5 July 1884 in PA died December 1973 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. Margie had children from previous marriage(s). One daughter named Dorothy Richards is listed as a stepdaughter of Edward’s and is 10 years of age in the 1930 census.
5. Druscilla V. Sheats known as “Drucie” was born 12 December 1872 in Clarion County, PA and died 19 May 1945. She married William C. HAGEN, son of Ellen, who was born 17 November 1868 in Clarion County and died in 1918 in Venango County, PA. In the 1910 census, this family was living in Oil City, PA. They had twelve children.
a. Lloyd Clark Hagen was born 29 March 1893.
b. William George Hagen was born 12 May 1894.
c. Nelly Martha Hagen was born 14 November 1895 and died before 1910.

6. Sarah Florence Sheats was born 28 June 1874 in Clarion County, PA. In the 1880 census she is listed as 6 years of age. She died 15 September 1892.
7. Vernon Augusta Sheats was born 25 October 1876 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 9 June 1959 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. He married Nina “Beatrice” MOORE in 1905. She was born 2 February 1884 and died 26 August 1965 in Venango County, PA. They had three children.
a. Grace Sheats was born 19 March 1907 and died December 1977 in Venango County, PA. She married Samuel H. LOWRY who was born 25 November 1908 and died 9 November 1992 in Venango County, PA.
b. Samuel “Lee” Sheats was born 29 August 1908 and died 1952. He married Margaret [maiden name unknown].
c. James B. Sheats was born 13 September 1909 and died 11 February 1998 in Oil City, PA. He married Marion O’BRIEN on 4 July 1942.
8. Farz “Farry” Sheats was born 25 October 1876 in Clarion County, PA. Nothing further is known about Farz. It seems that he was the twin of Vernon. He is not listed in the 1880 census so we assume that he died at a young age.
9. Pearl L. Sheats was born 24 August 1878 in Clarion County, PA and died 14 January 1963. She married George Harvey KRUG, son of George Harvey Krug and Margaret Monkern, on 7 November 1900. He was born 2 July 1878 in Venango County, PA. This couple had six children.
a. Earl H. Krug was born 26 May 1901 in Venango County, PA and died 14 September 1991.
b. Lorraine Katherine Krug was born 14 November 1902 in Venango County, PA and died 13 November 1998 in Oil City, PA. She married James L. REYNOLDS on 25 November 1929. James was born 30 March 1904 and died May 1981.
c. Ralph H. Krug was born 27 August 1906 in Venango County, PA and died June 1970 in Venango County, PA.

In 1910, this couple was living in Oil City, PA and had no children at that time.
SUSANNAH DETAR (1841-1906)
Susannah Detar was born 1 May 1841 in Clarion County, PA and died 31 December 1906 in Venango County, PA. She married Jacob M. CONRAD, son of Daniel Conrad and Susanna Hileman, on 12 November 1868. Jacob was born 11 April 1839 in Huntington, Clarion County, PA and died 11 August 1914 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. They are buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. They had two children.
1. Arthur Y. Conrad was born 18 September 1869 in Clarion County, PA and died 28 December 1962 in Venango County, PA. He married Netta “Nettie” B. KRUG, daughter of George Harvey Krug and Margaret Monkern, about 1893. Nettie was born in 27 October 1872 in Oil City, Venango County, PA and died 5 October 1956 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. They are buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City, Venango County, PA. This couple had seven children.
a. Mildred M. Conrad was born April 1896 and died 1960. She Joseph “Lee” LOURET. Lee was born 4 November 1896 in Verndale, Minnesota and died 26 April 1970 in Erie, Erie County, PA.
b. Marjorie J. Conrad was born May 1898 and died 1929. She married Guy FOSTER.
c. Paul K. Conrad was born 28 February 1901 in Venango County, PA and died in February 1980 in Allegheny County, PA. He married Ethel A. McELHATTAN who was born 29 May 1902 in Pennsylvania and died 15 March 1991. They are buried in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills, Allegheny County, PA. In the 1920 census they were living in Stowe Township, Allegheny County, PA where Paul was a high school science teacher. They had two children: Paul K. Conrad Jr. and Claudia Conrad.
d. Louise Conrad was born 1904 in Venango County, PA and died 1965. She married Fred INGRAHAM sometime after 1930. They had a daughter: Marjorie Ingraham.
e. William Arthur Conrad was born in 21 January 1906 in Venango County, PA. He married Elizabeth GOODWIN. They had two children: Boyd G. Conrad and Beth Conrad.
f. Boyd J. Conrad was born 21 April 1908 in Venango County, PA and died in November 1984 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. Boyd was a Corporal in the US Army during World War II. He was buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City, Venango County, PA. He married Jeannette A. JEFFRIES who was born 24 September 1912 and died 30 March 1998. They had a son: Conrad A. Conrad.
g. G. Dean Conrad was born in 1910 in Venango County, PA. He married Lynn [maiden name unknown].
2. William Harrison D. Conrad known as “Harry” was born 24 October 1871 in Clarion County, PA and died 28 October 1949 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. Harry was a blacksmith. He married Bernice A. SHEFFER who was born 13 December 1878 in Pennsylvania and died in 1948 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. They are buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. They had three children.
a. Martha Olive Conrad was born on 11 April 1907 in Clarion County, PA and died on 19 March 1993 in Centerville, Crawford County, PA. She married Archie Raymond LINGO who was born on 18 July 1907 in Pennsylvania and died in July 1985 in Centerville, Crawford County, PA.
b. Harold E. Conrad was born about 1912 either in Clarion County or Venango County, PA.
c. Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Conrad was born 21 December 1918 in Venango County, PA. She married Robert PETTIGREW on 7 September 1940.
DANIEL ELIAS DETAR (1842-1923)
Daniel Elias Detar was born 21 May 1842 in Beaver Township, Clarion County, PA and died in 10 September 1923 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA. He married Catherine Anna HONDEL, daughter of John and Clarissa Hondel, on 1 October 1868. Catherine was born 17 June 1850 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died in 25 November 1922 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Venus Cemetery in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA. They had five children.
1. Elmer Martin Detar was born 19 September 1869 in Washington Township, Clarion County and died 21 May 1952 in Venango County, PA. He married Carrie May BYERS, daughter of Albert L. and Margaret H. Byers, on 18 September 1893 in Meadville, PA. Carrie was born 23 April 1871 in Pinegrove Township, Venango County, PA and died 30 September 1952 in Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Venus Cemetery in Fryburg, Venango County, PA. They had two children.
a. Floyd Leroy R. Detar was born 10 January 1894 in Clarion County, PA and died May 1967. He married Elda Elizabeth FRANK, daughter of Solomon H. and Claudia R. Frank, sometime after 1930. Elda was born 7 October 1899 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died May 1979 in Oil City, Venango County, PA. They are buried in Dehner Cemetery, Clarion County, PA.
b. Twila Mae Detar was born 30 July 1908 in Clarion County, PA and died June 1982 in Reno, Venango County, PA. She married Ivan Sinclair EBBERT, son of Burton Wellington Ebbert and Carrie Louisa Wike. Ivan was born 24 January 1905 and died 16 July 1975 in Reno, Venango County, PA. They had two children: Richard Floyd Ebbert and Reeve Mae Ebbert.
2. Webster W. Detar was born 15 January 1871 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died on 26 May 1943 in Clarion County, PA. He is buried in Venus Cemetery, Washington Township, Clarion County, PA. It seems that he never married.
3. Flora Annetta Detar was born 14 April 1875 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died 1 January 1952 in Grove City, Mercer County, PA. She married Brady Carson KAPP, son of George Frederick Kapp and Melissa Jane Seigworth, in 1896. Brady was born 29 June 1874 in Clarion County, PA and died 20 December 1954. Brady and Cora, the wife of Clement M. Detar, are siblings. Flora and Brady are buried in Venus Cemetery, Fryburg, Venango County, PA. Flora and Brady had six children.
a. Ione Erla Kapp was born 2 October 1896 in Venango County, PA and died 3 February 1974 in Venus, Venango County, PA. She married Arley Delbert BEARY, son of Solomon G. and Laura A. Beary. Arley was born 19 August 1895 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died December 1963. They had 3 children: Lois Ione Beary (3 July 1918-13 November 2011) who married in July 1938 to Thomas Russell McWILLIAMS (3 January 1915-5 August 1978); Russell Leland Beary (16 August 1923-29 September 2007) who married on 8 November 1944 to Helen Irene SANDROCK (born 27 September 1923); and Gerald F. Beary (born 27 June 1931) who married Joann FISCHER (born 6 April 1934).
b. Leland Allison Kapp was born 15 August 1899 in Venango County, PA and died there in 24 December 1983 in Venango County, PA. He married Ruby Agnes FRENCH who was born 25 February 1898 in Venango County, PA and died 29 February 1992 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. They had a daughter: Ruth Louise Kapp (born on 28 May 1922) who married Colonel William George KISSELL (27 July 1917-1 March 1998).
c. Orville Roland Kapp was born 10 July 1905 in PA and died 12 June 1992 in Tionesta, Forest County, PA. He married Agnes Cecelia POULAN who was born 15 January 1906.
d. Olive E. Grace Kapp was born 7 November 1908 and died 8 August 1970. Olive married James S. HANSCOM.
e. Dorothy Lucille Kapp was born 12 March 1910 in Clarion County, PA and died 13 August 1998 in Marienville, Forest County, PA. She married Floyd Ellsworth SEIGWORTH, son of Leonard M. and Elizabeth M. Seigworth. Floyd was born 1 July 1897 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died April 1966. They had a daughter: Ruth Christine Seigworth who married Keith KAHLE.
f. George Siggins Kapp was born 18 July 1911 in Clarion County, PA and died 30 January 1964 in Pennsylvania. He married Mildred V. SHORTS, daughter of Clyde Alonzo Shorts and Mabel Leona Masters, on 2 April 1932. Mildred was born 16 August 1912 in Fern, Clarion County, PA and died 28 September 2009 in Pennsylvania. They had 4 sons: George Richard Kapp (born 21 September 1932) who married Ruth EHRHART (born 2 June 1934); Robert Paul Kapp (17 October 1933-19 December 1993) who married Martha Ann IRWIN (born 2 July 1936); Donald Roland Kapp (born 28 December 1934) who married Joyce HEATH (born 9 June 1937); and Edward Lee Kapp (8 March 1936-24 February 1998) who married Barbara CLARK (born 19 January 1939).
4. Mary Grace Detar was born 26 December 1878 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died 30 May 1958 in Clarion County, PA. She married Eugene Carman KAHLE, son of Dorsey P. Kahle and Rosa B. Sigworth, on 11 December 1913 in Chicago, Illinois. Eugene, the brother of Harry Perdue Kahle, was born in January 1870 in in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died in 1954.
5. Olive Mondella Detar was born 27 May 1885 in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died 17 November 1967 in Venango County, PA. She married Harry Perdue KAHLE, son of Dorsey P. Kahle and Rosa B. Sigworth, on 14 September 1910 in Clarion County, PA. Harry, the brother of Eugene Carman Kahle, was born 23 March 1880 Washington Township, Clarion County, PA and died 17 April 1926 in Venango County, PA. They are buried in Venus Cemetery, Fryburg, Venango County, PA. This couple had four children.
a. Arlene Valree Kahle was born 29 May 1912 and died 17 November 2001 in Clarion County, PA. She married William Oscar HUGUS on 10 August 1935. William was born 17 August 1904 and died March 1986 in Clarion County, PA. They had a daughter: Barbara Hugus (born 16 June 1937) who married on 6 July 1965 to Harold G. BAKER (born on 30 March 1934).
b. Janet Evora Kahle was born 28 January 1918. She married Rev. J.G. Hannah on 17 May 1947. J.G. Hannah was born 1902.
c. Louise Althea Kahle was born 19 March 1919. She married Paul DUNN on 15 October 1949. Paul was born 29 January 1918. They had two sons.
d. Evelyn June Kahle was born 22 June 1923. She married Glenn W. KAPP. Glenn was born 5 November 1922. They had three sons.
JOSEPH WELLINGTON DETAR (1848-1925)
Joseph Wellington Detar was born 13 July 1848 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA and died 16 March 1925 in Clarion County, PA. He married Catherine “Elizabeth” DAUM, daughter of Rheinart and Anna Maria Daum, on 25 December 1873. Catherine was born 27 September 1850 in Fryburg, Clarion County, PA and died on 26 January 1929 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. This couple had twelve children.
1. Cecelia Daritha Detar was born 27 September 1874 and died 27 December 1882 in Clarion County, PA at the age of 8. She is buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA with many other members of this family.
2. Vernon M. Detar was born 13 November 1875 and died 22 March 1965 in Clarion County, PA. Vernon did not marry. He is buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
3. Perry Sylvester Detar was born 9 March 1877 and died 23 February 1898 in Clarion County, PA at the age of 21 and unmarried. He is buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
4. John Wesley Detar was born 23 August 1878 and died 18 May 1934 in Clarion County, PA. He married Helen K. WHITLING, daughter of Sarah, on 7 October 1927. Helen was born in 1889 in PA and died 1978 in Clarion County, PA. John and Sarah are buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
5. Anna Gertrude Detar was born 20 March 1880 and died 29 January 1882 in Clarion County, PA at the age of 1 year and 10 months. She is buried at Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
6. Charles Rhinard Detar was born 1 February 1882 in Clarion County, PA and died 24 December 1944 in Robinson, Crawford County, Illinois. He married Lottie Bell REINDEHL, daughter of Sanford Stephen Reindehl and Maria Emeline Parker on 6 June 1913. Lottie was born on 7 July 1892 in Illinois and died in July 1973 in Robinson, Crawford County, Illinois. They are buried in Robinson New Cemetery, Crawford County, Illinois. They had three children.
a. Rex Reindehl Detar was born 22 April1914 in Crawford County, Illinois and died 6 September 1990 in Vigo County, Indiana. Rex married Caroline GENEVA who was born on 12 September 1916 and died on 26 June 1996 in Maryland. They ware buried in Roselawn Memorial Park, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.
b. Reva Grace Detar was born 15 November 1915 in Crawford County, Illinois and died on 3 March 2007 in Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois. She was buried in Sidener Cemetery, Fayette County, Illinois. She was employed as a candy maker at the Heath Candy Factory. She married Ray MATTIX on 12 July 1947. Ray died on 7 October 2006. Reva and Ray had a daughter.
c. Heloise Heloise Detar was born 13 February 1919 in Crawford County, Illinois and died on 9 January 2000 in Robinson, Crawford County, Illinois. She was buried in Robinson New Cemetery, Crawford County, Illinois. She married a Mr. DARNOLD.
7. Ira D. Detar was born 11 August 1883 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 14 April 1960 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. About 1911, he married Goldie I. CRIBBS, daughter of Lydia F. Cribbs, who was born 19 July 1885 and died 28 August 1988 in Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. They had a son.
a. William Robert Detar who was born 7 July 1913 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 25 February 2000 in Anderson, South Carolina. William married Edna M. SHEPHARD who was born 16 August 1916 in Wyoming and died 3 September 1993 in Butler County, PA. They had a son and a daughter: Donald A. Detar (born 30 May 1937 in Glacier County, Montana) and Roberta “Bobbi” I. Detar (born June 1940 in Glacier County, Montana).
8. Oren Odell Detar was born 28 February 1885 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA; resided for much of his life in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; and died 18 December 1952 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA. He is buried in Salem Cemetery. Oran married Margaret Francis MILLS, daughter of Joseph Mills and Veronica Burger on 7 May 1927 in Cuyaghoga County, Ohio. Margaret was born on 15 June 1898 in DuBois, Clearfield County, PA and died in 1992 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Brantford, Ontario, Canada. They had two children.
a. Robert Detar in Hamilton was born 28 November 1927 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
b. Marjorie Helen Detar was born on 23 April 1931 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and died on 18 June 1933 from influenza in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA.
9. Merl Clayton Detar was born 5 May 1887 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. and died 25 July 1961 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. Merle did not marry. He is buried at Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
10. Harry Benton Detar was born 9 December 1888 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died September 1974 in Chautauqua County, New York. He married Sophia E. PUDDEN on 4 April 1946. She was born 20 January 1890 in Pennsylvania and died in February 1981 in Silver Creek, Chautauqua County, New York. They are buried in Lakeside Memorial Park Cemetery, Hamburg, Erie County, New York.
11. Grace Lueta Detar was born 10 April 1891 Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 17 January 1964 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. She married George Leoth BASHLINE, son of Albert Bashline and Christine Snyder, on 8 October 1920. George was born 24 April 1896 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 28 December 1961 in Clarion County, PA. They are buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. They had a son.
a. James Dewayne Bashline was born 10 December 1922 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and died 29 June 2004 in Brookville, Jefferson County, PA. He was a Corporal in the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment during World War II. He married Jean SERVEY who was born 1926 and died 1988. They are buried in Clarion Cemetery, Clarion County, PA. They had a son and a daughter: David Bashline (born in 1959) and Amy Bashline (born in 1962).
12. Guy Alvin Detar was born 22 June 1893 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 20 March 1957 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. He married Mabel Florence RHOADS on 30 June 1920. Mabel was born 20 March 1893 in Clarion County, PA and died 22 June 1993 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA. They are buried at Salem Lutheran Cemetery. They had three children:
a. Sarah Elizabeth Detar was born on 9 June 1925 in Clarion County, PA. She was buried in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA.
b. Vaughn Alvin Detar who was born 14 December 1927 in Lamartine, Clarion County, PA and died 15 September 2005 in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He married Mary Joan WHITE known as “Kitty” who was born 11 September 1931 and died 30 December 2006 in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. They had five children: Vaughna Marie Detar, Dennis Scott Detar, Brian Robert Detar, Steven Douglas Detar, and Nancy Leigh Detar (6 October 1970-10 February 1971).
c. Richard Merl Detar was born 26 July 1932 in Clarion County, PA and married Louisa Mae SANDERS. They had four children: Deborah Elaine Detar, Marcia Lynn Detar, Richard Alvin Detar, and David Eugene Detar.
SIMON A. DETAR (1850-1936)
Simon A. Detar was born 1 November 1850 in Clarion County, PA and died in 1936. He married Mary E. ATTLEBERGER, daughter of Samuel Attleberger and Jane McGinnis, on 28 May 1878. She was born 14 July 1856 in Clarion County, PA and died 16 February 1910 in Clarion County, PA. They had three children.
1. Ethel Ophelia Detar was born 8 April 1879 in Clarion County, PA and died 27 October 1915 in Clarion County, PA. She never married. She is buried in Salem Cemetery, Clarion County, PA.
2. Leroy Roland or Rolland L. Detar known as “Rolley” was born 11 May 1880 in Clarion County, PA and died 25 November 1955 in Clarion County, PA. Rolley married Rossetta Belle LAUGHNER (known as Rosie), daughter of Elias and Anna L. Laughner, on 7 July 1903. Rosie was born 3 February 1880 in Clarion County, PA and died in 29 June 1954 in Clarion County, PA. This couple had eight children.
a. Virginia Ellen Detar who was born 26 January 1904 in Dakon, West Virginia and died February 1982 in Clarion County, PA. She married James FLEMING on 28 September 1921. James was born 27 December 1895 in West Virginia and died October 1986 in Clarion County, PA. They had 5 children.
b. Lillian Irene Detar was born 26 January 1906 in Dakon, West Virginia. She married Fred H. WEAVER, son of Martin L. and Rebecca J. Weaver. Fred was born 20 November 1900 in Clarion County, PA and died September 1980 in Venango County, PA. They had 3 children.
c. Myra Ophelia Detar was born 4 December 1907 in West Virginia. She married Claire OAKES who was born 2 October 1905 in PA and died November 1963. They had 6 children.
d. Leroy R. Detar was born 10 December 1909 in Unie, West Virginia and died 26 July 1991. Leroy married Florence HARTZELL who was born 29 October 1913 and died 5 November 1997 in PA. They had 2 children.
e. Athlyn Esther Detar was born 5 March 1913 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA and died 20 December 2002 in PA. . She married Clifford L. RHOADES on 16 May 1934. Clifford was born 18 January 1912 in PA and died 22 February 2004 in PA. They had one son.
f. Willard Laughner Detar was born 15 August 1915 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA and died 5 July 1994 in McKean County, PA. He married Frances T. MUNDAY on 15 August 1938. Frances was born 26 March 1920 and died September 1994 in McKean County, PA. They had 2 daughters.
g. Carl Lorraine Detar was born 13 July 1917 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA and died 5 November 1985 in McKean County, PA. He first married Hazel L. BLAIR (26 November 1914 WV – 8 June 1962 PA), daughter of Daniel and Stella Blair. This marriage ended in divorce. They had five children. He married a second time to Armine “Monty” SOUTH (30 July 1929 KY-13 September 2007 AZ). They had one son.
h. Clifford Lawrence Detar (Sr.) was born 6 April 1920 in Salem Township, Clarion County, PA and died on 10 March 2005 in Clarion County, PA. He first married Alma BERLIN. This marriage ended in divorce. They had one daughter. He married a second time to Mary DANIELS, daughter of Ralph Daniels and Florence Elva Slaughenhaupt. They had one son.
3. Melvin Lorraine Detar was born 14 February 1893 in Clarion County and died January 1977 in Allegheny County, PA. He is buried in Salem Cemetery, Lamartine, Clarion County, PA along with many other members of this family. Melvin married Margaret McANINCH, daughter of David Lewis and Rosella McAninch. Margaret was born May 1894 in Clarion County, PA and died 9 October 1963. They had two children.
SARAH Jane JACKSON born about 1855 was raised in the Joseph and Anna Marie Detar family. In the 1860 census, she is living with this family at the age of 5. In the 1870 census, she is living with this family at the age of 14 and listed as Sarah J. Jackson. She later married Melanchon Attleberger who was the brother of Mary E. Attleberger who married Simon Detar [see above].
