DARWIN TAYLOR KNAPPENBERGER (1863-1934)

Maxwell and Susanna Margaret Rugh, who was born September 1865 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and died in 1950 in Orange County, Florida.  A biography on Darwin states:  “Darwin T. Knappenberger, one of the most successful merchants of Jeannette, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, is a native of this country, as was his father before him, but is descended from good old German stock of the type which has played so important a part in the development of the western part of the State…”  In the 1930 census, Darwin and Elizabeth were living in Orlando, Orange County, Florida.  Darwin and Lizzie had one daughter.

D.T. owned a farm [pictured below] about half way between Hunker and old Madison in Westmoreland County, PA.  Local tradition states that British General Edward Braddock, of the French & Indian War, encamped on this farm.  During the French and Indian War, the French had taken control of what is now Pittsburgh building a Fort called Ft. Duquesne at the confluence of the two rivers that make up the Ohio River.  This land was claimed by the British and in fact the colony of Virginia had earlier sent a young Lieutenant Colonel named George Washington in 1754 to try and gain the land back.  He was unsuccessful.  In June of 1755, General Edward Braddock was sent by the British to Virginia to take command. He marched against Fort Duquesne with 1,400 Redcoats and a smaller number of colonials, only to be ambushed and decisively defeated by a much smaller force of French and Indians.  Braddock died during the battle and only 500 of his men led by Colonel Washington made their way back to Virginia.
