GENERAL INFORMATION

Daniel A. Knappenberger, son of Henry Knappenberger, Jr., was born 12 April 1813 in Macungie Township, Lehigh County, PA and died in 1889 in Mercer County, PA.  Daniel is the founder of the Mercer County, PA Knappenberger Family.  Daniel married Maria Anna RUMFELD/RUMFELT known as “Mary” in May 1835.  Mary was born October 1812 in Macungie Township, Lehigh County, PA and died 19 April 1881 in Mercer County, PA.  She is buried in Good Hope Cemetery, West Salem Township, Mercer County, PA.  They had eleven children.

OTHER MERCER COUNTY KNAPPENBERGER FAMILY MEMBERS

There was an Emeline Knappenberger who was born about 1835 in Pennsylvania.  In the 1860 census for Deer Creek Township, Mercer County, PA, this Emeline Knappenberger is listed as 25 years of age, single, and working as a domestic servant in the household of Solomon Bortz.  The Bortz and Knappenberger families were close friends as indicated by church records.  This Emeline Knappenberger also attended the Good Hope Church in West Salem Township as did Daniel A. Knappenberger and his family.  In addition, Daniel and his wife later named one of their children after Emeline.  At this time we do not know how Emeline fits into the family.  Could she possible be a niece and the daughter of Thomas Knappenberger (older brother of Daniel) and Thomas’ wife Sarah Gruber?

CHILDREN

JAMES KNAPPENBERGER (c1835 – 1898)

James Knappenberger was born about 1835 in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.  In the 1850 census, James is listed as 17 years of age in his parent’s household.  He married Susan C. [maiden name unknown] who was born August 1846 in Canada.  The 1880 census indicates that her parents were born in Ireland.  In 1880, James is listed as an oil well contractor.  The 1888-1890 Bradford, Pennsylvania directory lists “James Knoppenberger” as a contractor living at 77 State Street.  He died late 1898 in Auglaize County, Ohio.  James had a son, Sylvester, most likely before he was married.  James and his wife, Susan, adopted a daughter, Lilly Lowell, in 1883.  Adoption records indicate that they had no children.  Susan Knappenberger was listed in the 1900 census as 53 years of age, widow, born in Canada living in Auglaize County, Ohio.  Her occupation was listed as oil producer.  She is living in Bradford, McKean County, PA in the 1910 and 1920 census.  She was born August 1846 in Canada and died 5 April 1926 in Warren County, PA in the state hospital.  Her death certificate provides no further information on her maiden name or her parents.  She is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Bradford.  All census data indicates that she gave birth to no children.

1.  Sylvester Knappenberger was born about 1857 most likely in Mercer County, PA.  In the 1860 census, he is listed as 3 years of age and living with his grandparents, Daniel and Maria Knappenberger, in West Salem Township, Mercer County, PA.  In the 1880 census, Sylvester Knappenberger is listed with his father, James Knappenberger and his wife, Susan, in Bradford, McKean County, PA, as 22 years of age and a farmer.  However, in the 1880 census for Mercer County, Sylvester Knappenberger is also listed with his grandparents and listed as a farmer.  It would seem that Sylvester was raised on his grandparents’ farm and was visiting with his father at the time of the 1880 census since his occupation is listed as farmer.  We know nothing further about him after the 1880 census.

2.  Lillian or Lilly [born Lowell] Knappenberger was born about 1878 most likely in Titusville, Crawford County, PA.  She was adopted by James and Susan Knappenberger in January 1883 in Titusville, Crawford County, PA.  The papers state that Lilly was born to Ida Lowell of Titusville.  Lilly’s last name was changed to Knappenberger at the time of the adoption in 1883. We know that her name was still Lillian Knappenberger (or Knoppenberger) in 1903 when she contested the will of James Knoppenberger in Auglaize County, Ohio.  Nothing further is known about either of these children.
