GENERAL INFORMATION

The KNUPPENBURG family was founded by Adam Knuppenburg(er), son of Philip Adam Knappenberger and grandson of J. Erhard Knappenberger, immigrant.   Adam Knuppenburg(er) was born 17 May 1794 in Carbon County, PA and died August 1872 in Luzerne County, PA.   He married Eunice ALLEN, daughter of Ebenezer Dana Allen and Laodicea Vose/Vorse, 7 May 1815 in Luzerne County, PA (later Wyoming County, PA).  Eunice was born 21 September 1799 in Pennsylvania (her parents were born in Connecticut) and died in 1888 in Scranton, Lackawanna County, PA.   In the 1880 census, Eunice was 81 years of age living with her widowed daughter, Lodica Florey, and her family in Scranton. In the 1840 census, Adam Knuppenberger was living in Windham Township, Luzerne County, PA.  Wyoming County, PA later split off from Luzerne County, PA.  Vinnie Knappenberger’s history written in 1916 says, “tradition states that Adam finally settled in Wyoming County, PA.  Adam Knappenburg and his descendants spell their name Knuppenburg.”  A family Bible that was owned by Stanley K. Knox of Olympia, Washington in 1981, lists the family name as “Knuppenburger”.  In this Bible is listed Adam and Eunice’s marriage date and the births and marriages of their ten children plus two deaths.  Four of their sons fought in the Civil War.
