GENERAL INFORMATION
Philip David Gharky, son of Samuel "David" Gharky and Elisabeth
Knappenberger, was born 2 February 1801 in Alexandria,
Scioto County, Ohio and died 21 January 1856 in Strasburg, Tuscarawas County,
Ohio. He moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio by 1825 near his two
uncles, Philip Knappenberger and William Knappenberger. Here he purchased a total of 195 acres
over the years. Philip married Margaret WALLICK on 23 June 1825 in
Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She was born 16 September 1807 in Cumberland County, PA and
died 11 October 1871 in Strasburg, Ohio. This couple was buried in
Grandview Cemetery of Strasburg, Ohio. They had ten children.
CHILDREN
JOHN GHARKY (1826-1893)
John Gharky was born 29 March 1826 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio
and died 5 March 1893 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
He married Eliza Jane SIMMONS on 1 April 1847 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Eliza was born 1822 in Pennsylvania and died 27 January 1896
in Troy, Geauga County, Ohio. They had four children.
1. Lorenzo Gharky was born 16 September 1848 in Scioto County, Ohio and
died 2 June 1901 in Geauga County, Ohio. Lorenzo married Margaret HEIM in
1870 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Margaret was born 30 September 1847 in Virginia and died 1 April 1904 in Geauga
County, Ohio. Lorenzo and Margaret had seven children.
a. Sylvester John Gharky was born 27 September 1871 in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio and died 18 June 1928 in Geauga County, Ohio. He married Laura Ada HOSTETLER
, daughter of Christian B. Hostetler and Amanda Dietz, on 17 November 1894.
Laura was born 7 August 1874 in Sugar Creek, Tuscarawas County, Ohio and died
April 1953 in Novelty, Ohio.
They had a son named Irving Sylvester Gharky (born 5 September
1907 and died 1 June 2002 in Maricopa County, Arizona) who married Lillian A.
(maiden name unknown) who was born 3 February 1908 in Alliance,
Ohio.
b. Della Jennie Gharky was born 30 March 1873 in Strasburg, Tuscarawas
County, Ohio and died 1 June 1954 in Geauga County, Ohio. She married Walter Valentine JONES on
31 March 1891. Walter was born 19 November 1869 in Ashtabula County, Ohio
and died 8 July 1951 in Geauga County, Ohio. They had five children.
Della Jennie [Gharky] Jones
1). Paul P. Jones was born 31 December 1889 in Geauga County, Ohio
and died in Geauga County, Ohio on 2 June 1975. He first married Addie B.
HATHAWAY on 19 April 1913. Addie was born 1886 and died 26 August
1938. They had a daughter, Pauline Jones born 6 July 1917 in geauga Co.,
Ohio and died May 1995 in Lincoln Co., Oregon. She married Burt Becksted
born 13 July 1915 in Ohio and died Jan 1983 in Lincoln Co., Oregon.
Paul Jones later married Agnes FERRY who was born 13 February 1903 and died 12 July
1976 in Geauga County, Ohio. They had a daughter, Mary Margaret
Jones.
2). William Henry Jones was born 25 July 1895 in Geauga County, Ohio
and died 24 August 1972 in Geauga County, Ohio. He married Hazel FORD on 18 April 1916.
Hazel was born 10 October 1875 and died 7 July 1974 in Summit County, Ohio.
3). Lillian Mae Jones known as "Lilly" was born 30 October 1898 in Geauga County, Ohio and died on 23 December
2002 in Ohio. Lilly had a child with Karl SCHEUERMANN (SHERMAN) named Karl
Sherman Jones born 18 Nov 1918 who married Julia Ladicko (3 Jan 1913 PA-18 April
1997 Ohio).
Lilly married Graydon William WHITE. They had
four children: Juanita, Ronald, Phyllis and Marcella.

4). Mildred Margaret Jones was born 16 August 1908 in
Geauga County, Ohio and died 22
October 1984 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She first married Guy Charles PRICE on 29 September
1925. Guy was born about 1907 in Topeka, Kansas. They had two
daughters: Evelyn Margaret Price (30 Sept 1926-10 July 1995) and Betty
Jane Price (23 May 1929-17 Oct 2002). She later married Francis
Charles PRAMPLE on 16 January 1937. Frances was born 5 August 1894 and died 9
November 1977 in Geauga County, Ohio.
5). Daisy L. Jones was born 31 march 1914 in Geauga Co., PA and
died 3 Aug 2000 in Ottawa County, Ohio. She married Wilfred E. JACKSON who was
born 28 Feb 1910 in Geauga County, Ohio and died 1Aug 1988 in Ottawa Co., Ohio.
c. Birdie May Gharky was born 5 November 1875 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio
and died 7 December 1939 in Summit County, Ohio. She
married Fred N. BRANNON, son of William H. and Alma Brannon, about 1911 in
Ohio. Fred was born 29 November 1888 and died 28 December 1958 in Portage
Co., Ohio.
d. John Henry Gharky who was born 24 November 1877 in Troy, Geauga
County, Ohio and died on 16 September 1913 in Troy, Geauga County, Ohio.
He married Lula P. COOK on 23 May 1900. Lula was born 3 January 1881 in
Warren County, Ohio and died 12 July 1968 in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. This couple had two children. Lula P. Cook Gharky remarried in 1918 to
Alexander H. Walker and had a daughter named Dora L. Walker (born about 1919 in
Cleveland).
Golda
Emmaline Gharky known as "Goldie" was born 15 August 1902 in Geauga County,
Ohio and died 18 November 1996 in Clark County, Ohio. She married Arthur Lewis WALKER
, son of Alex and Mary Dora Walker about 1921. Arthur was born 18 January 1898
and died 25 September 1990. Later, Golda married Albert
O. SCHINMAN, son of Adolf and Hulda Schinman. Albert was born 3 December
1906 and died 25 April 1993.
Bert Charles Gharky was born 13 December 1903 in Geauga County, Ohio and
died 22 November 1970 in Cleveland, Ohio. Bert Married Lenore V. FREEMAN
(1905-11 August 1976).
e. Thomas "Richard" Gharky was born 9 November 1879 in Troy,
Geauga County, Ohio and died 17 January 1959 in Burton, Geauga County,
Ohio. He married Lillis E. COOK on 15 December 1900 in Geauga County,
Ohio. Lillis was a sister of Lula P. Cook [see above]. Lillie was
born 25 May 1883 in Lordstown, Warren County, Ohio and died 12 February 1961
in Burton, Geauga County, Ohio. They had five children.
Leon Lester Gharky was born 16 November 1900 in Geauga County,
Ohio.
Viola Lucy Gharky was born 18 September 1902 and died 21 July
2000 in Florida. She first married Elmer BLAINE and later married
a Mr. MURPHY.
Plemon Ward Gharky was born 22 October 1904 in Geauga County, Ohio
and died 16 June 1966 in Ohio. He married Gladys Isabell THORP in
1924. Gladys was born 22 December 1904 and died 23 March 1974.
Lucy Etna Gharky was born 10 Feb 1907 in Geauga County, Ohio
and died 24 March 2004 in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio. She
first married Chester B. TOOLE and later married a Kenneth W.
SMITH in 1936.
Rose Blanche Gharky was born 23 May 1912 in Geauga County,
Ohio and died February 1981 in Maricopa County, Arizona. She first married Charles SCHNEIDER
about 1928 (marriage ended in divorce) and had a daughter, Gloria Jean. She then married William Elmer
OWEN (26 August 1916 - 1 November 1996) and had a son, Thomas William Owen (1
Dec 1943-8 Dec 1995).
f. Charles Gharky was born 21 February 1884 in Geauga County, Ohio
and died 12 July 1964 in Florida. He married Maude Lulu ENSIGN, daughter
of Ora Addison Ensign and Eunice Estella Simmons, on 7 April 1906 in Geauga
County, Ohio. Maude was born 7 October 1883 in Geauga County, Ohio and
died 14 November 1972 in Lake County, Ohio. This couple had two
daughters.
Reba E. Gharky was born 14 May 1908 and died 28 September 2001.
Reba married Henry WILSON.
Irene M. Gharky was born 15 April 1910 in Geauga County, Ohio and
died 4 January 2002 in Florida. Irene married Richard JANKOWSKY who was
born 12 May 1909 in Ohio and died 1 December 1995 in Florida.
g. Frank Gharky was born 9 November 1889 in Geauga County, Ohio and died 31 December 1970
in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He married Mary "Rose" KALINE
about 1915. Rose was born 8 May 1888 in Ohio and died 2 January 1958 in
Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They are buried in Shadyside Cemetery, Geauga
County, Ohio. They had four children.
Laurene Gharky born 5 Feb 1915 and died 19 May 2005 in Geauga County,
Ohio. She married Laurence NELSON who was born 30 Dec 1910 and died 30 May
1995 in Geauga County, Ohio.
Margaret M. Gharky married Otto R. PILNY who was born 13 July 1914 and died 5
June 1986 in Ohio.
Sylvester Frank Gharky (1926) married Bernice BROOM who was born 17 Jan 1924 in Ohio and
died 1 June 1974. Robert
Vincent Gharky (1932) married Virginia RUTLEDGE.
2. Irene Gharky was born 10 March 1850 in Tuscarawas
County, Ohio and died 23 January 1936 in Los Angeles Co., California. She married Herreman "Orlando"
MEEK, son of John Fielding Meek and Sarah Ann Hester Hunt, on 8 March 1875 in
Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. Orlando was born 20 February 1854 in
Hancock, Indiana and died 10 September 1922 in Los Angles Co., California.
He worked for the railroad. They had four children.
a. Sarah Jane Meek was born 1876 in Chillicothe, Livingston County,
Missouri and died prior to 1880 as a young child.
b. Herreman John W. Meek was born 12 December 1877 in
Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri and died in Los Angeles, California
on 10 August 1932. He married Lulu WEST on 8 March 1900. Lulu was
born 23 September 1879 in Sparta, Missouri. They had 3 children:
Herreman Rufus Meek was born 26 October 1901 in Missouri and died 7
December 1944 in Ventura, California.
Richard Meek was born 19 Feb 1909 in Alabama and died 2 March
1980 in Los Angeles County, California
Irene Meek was born about 1919 in Los Angeles County, CA
c. Eva L. Meek was born 5 May 1882 in Chillicothe, Missouri and died
28 May 1978 in Los Angeles Co., California. He never married.
d. Mary Irene Meek was born 6 February 1886 in Chillicothe, Missouri
and died 12 September 1944.. She was single in the 1920 and 1930 census.
She was a musician.
3. Sylvester Gharky was born 31 January 1852 in
Tuscarawas County, Ohio and died 26 December 1911 in Ohio. He married Martha
Elizabeth KNAPPENBERGER, daughter of David Knappenberger and Elisabeth F.
McKimson, on 21 May 1876 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Sylvester and
Martha were second cousins, once removed. Martha was born 8
December 1854 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and died 29 December 1913 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
They are buried in Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Ohio. They had
three children.
a. Myrtle Gharky was born December 1876 in Ohio. She married
Clarence O. SMITH who was born August 1875 in Ohio He most likely died
between 1900 and 1910. This couple
seemingly had no children.
b. Daisy D. Gharky was born July 1878 in Ohio. She
was
unmarried in the 1910 census at the age of 31 and was living with her
parents. We assume that Daisy never married.
c. Charles Gharky was born 11 April 1883 in Ohio
and died in Ohio on 29 August 1883. He was only 4 months and 22 days
of age upon his death.
4. Dot Eliza Jane Gharky was born 5 January 1858 in Tuscarawas
County, Ohio and died in 25 Oct 1938 Geauga County, Ohio on 2 November 1938. She is
buried in Troy Cemetery. Dot married Samuel Cullen AGLER on 18 September
1875 in Strasburg, Ohio. The marriage ended in divorce. They
had two sons whose last names were changed to Gharky.
a. Martin D. Agler Gharky was born 21 July 1876 in
Stark County, County, Ohio and died 7 June 1926 in Geauga County, Ohio. He
married Nellie C. SPENCER on 5 May 1906 in Geauga County, Ohio. Nellie
was born September 1884 in Portage County, Ohio. They seemingly had no
children. Martin is buried in Troy Cemetery in Geauga County, Ohio.
b. Vitalis C. Gharky known as "Tal" was born 17 August 1877 in
Stark County, Ohio and died 19 June 1963 in Portage County, Ohio. He was
married to Sophie PFENNINGER sometime after the 1930 census. This
marriage ended in divorce and seemingly they had no children. Tal is buried in Troy Cemetery in Geauga County, Ohio.
ROSANNAH GHARKY (1827-1875)
Rosannah was born 10 November 1827 in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas
County, Ohio and died 26 October 1875 in Ohio. She married John J. STEINER
on 30 January 1848 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. John was born about
1826 in Ohio and died sometime after the 1880 census. They had
the following children:
1. Mary Steiner was born about 1848. She married Steve
BURDYE.
2. Adeline E. Steiner was born July 1850 in Ohio and
died sometime after 1910 in Lehigh County, PA. She married John MATCHETT
27 Oct 1867. He was born October 1836 in England and died between 1900
and 1910 in Lehigh County, PA. They had 6 children that we know of
though it seems that Adeline may have had as many as 11 children of which 5
were alive in 1910. The known children include: William J.
Matchett born about 1871 in Ohio, Henry E. Matchett born about 1878 in PA,
Emma, born Nov 1880 in Lehigh Co., PA, Truman born June 1883 in Lehigh Co.,
PA, John born May 1890 in Lehigh County, PA and Ruth born Feb 1894 in Lehigh
County, PA.
3. Caroline Steiner was born about 1854 in Ohio.
She married Wesley TWIGG and had two
children named James Twigg and Hazel Twigg.
4. Sarah Steiner was born about 1856 in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio. She married Mr. RODGERS.
5. James Steiner was born about 1858 in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio.
6. Emma Steiner was born about 1860. She married Stephen SHERMAN and had three daughters named Edith
Sherman, Evelyn Sherman and Mildred Sherman.
7. Charles
E. Steiner was born about 1865 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

SARAH GHARKY (1829-1924)
Sarah Gharky born 25 September 1829 in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio and died 4 November 1924
in Stark County, Ohio. She
married Henry EBERLY, son of Michael Eberly and Susanna Deardorff, on 7 November
1849 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was born 1828 in Pennsylvania and died 7 November
1896 in Ohio. They are buried in Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Ohio. They had
three children.
1. Augustus Eberly was born September 1850 in Ohio. He married
Catherine (maiden name unknown) who was born May 1871 in Germany. They had two daughters:
Gladys Eberly born Jan 1899 and Clarys B. Eberly born about 1903.
2. Mary Jane Eberly was born in 1853 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and
died 2 June 1912 in Ohio. She married Fred FELLER who was born 1853 and died 31 October
1925. This
couple is buried in Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Ohio. They had
two daughters: Gertrude Feller and Mildred Feller.
3. Samantha Eberly was born October 1855 in Ohio and died 28 Oct
1942 in Stark Co., Ohio. She
first married William Webster SLICHTER (or SCHLICHTER) in 1875. He
was born 1854 in Stark County Ohio and died 1898 there. Samantha was
listed as 44 years old
and a widow in the 1900 census. They had a son named Clarence Earl Slichter (born
29 March 1881 in
Stark County, Ohio and died 19 July 1946) who married Clara EVANS (born 9 Oct
1884 and died 26 Sept 1939). Samantha married a second time to widower Robert A. PHERSON
of Tuscarawas County, Ohio who was born November 1837 in Ohio and died 16 Nov
1924 in Stark County, Ohio.
GEORGE GHARKY (1832-1832) [Twin]
George Gharky born 8 February 1832 and died 15 February 1832 in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio He is buried in
Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
DAVID S. GHARKY (1832-1832) [Twin]
David S. Gharky born 8 February 1832 and died 22 February
1832 in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He is buried in
Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
ELIZA JANE GHARKY (1833-1911)
Eliza Jane Gharky known as "Jane" was born 10 June 1833
in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and died 20 July
1911 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
She married Michael EBERLY, son of Michael Eberly and Susanna Deardorff, on 27 October
1850 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Michael,
a brother of Henry who married Sarah Gharky [see above], was born 1 October
1825 in Greencastle, Pennsylvania and died 2 January 1911 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
They are buried in Grandview Cemetery. This couple had two children.
1. Emma J. Eberly was born July 1851 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio
and died 24 October 1927 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She married George W. HUTH who was
born February 1851 in Ohio and died 29 March 1929 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They
are buried in Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. George and Emma had
five children that
we know about.
a. Nora J. Huth born about 1872.
b. William J. Huth born 1875 and died 22 September 1961 who married
Edith M. ZUTAVERN who was born 1875 in Indiana and died 25 January 1953.
They are buried in Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They had a son
named W. Brooks Huth (born in 1901 in Ohio).
c. Florence Huth
d. Porter George Huth born 16 April 1883 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and
died 1 January 1910 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He is buried in Grandview
Cemetery, Strasburg, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
e. Mary L. Huth born March 1889 in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio.
2. Phillip Eberly was born 20 July 1854 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and
died 21 July 1919 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" KUTCHER
who was born 10 August 1858 and died 30 April 1927. They are buried in
Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. It seems that they had no children.
PHILIP GHARKY (1836-1839)
Philip Gharky born 5 July 1836 and died 1839 in Tuscarawas
County, Ohio at 3 years of age. He is buried in Grandview Cemetery with
his brothers.
ABRAHAM GHARKY (1838-1841)
Abraham Gharky born 15 December 1838 and died 1841 in
Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He is buried with his brothers in Grandview
Cemetery.
KESIAH GHARKY (1842-1864)
Kesiah Gharky born 20 June 1842 and died 15 April 1864 in
Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She married Franklin PATTERSON on 16 December
1860 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
Kesiah died at the age of 21 after being married only a few years and seemingly
had no children. Kesiah
is buried with her parents in Grandview Cemetery, Strasburg, Ohio.
Frank Patterson moved to Barton County, Kansas and was living there alone in the
1880 census as a widower.
MARY MARGARET GHARKY (1844-?)
Mary Margaret Gharky known as "Mollie" was born 1 March
1844
in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She married Gideon M. ARMBREST on
18 December 1870 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Her husband was born
July 1840 in Ohio according to the 1900 census. The family lived in Beach
City, Stark County, Ohio. They had four children.
1. Emma J. Armbrest was born September 1871. In the 1900 census,
she was 28 years of age and single.. 2. Owen Warling Armbrest was born
21 September 1874 in Stark County, Ohio and
died on 13 October 1959 in Stark County, Ohio. Owen married Gertrude L.
PHERSON about 1900. Gertrude was born about 1879 in Ohio. They had
three children.
Robert "Dale" Armbrest was
born 12 May 1904 in Stark County, Ohio and died 8 September 1997. He
first married
M. Grace [last name unknown] (1907-1967) and later married Inez M. [last name
unknown] (1915-1988). Voyne A. Armbrest was born 8 August 1908
and died 1 May 1992. He married Martha G. [last name unknown] (born about
1908-1967). Ruth M. Armbrest was born about 1914 in Stark County,
Ohio.
3. Ernest A. Armbrest was born 22 February 1877 in Stark County, Ohio. He
first married Neddie [last name
unknown] about 1905 who
was born about 1883 in Ohio. No children seemingly were born to this
marriage. His second wife was Cornelia F. [last name unknown] who he
married about 1915. Cornelia was born 9 February 1893 in Michigan and died 30 August
1976 in Loraine County, Ohio. This couple had two children: Lois Armbrest (born
about 1917) and Donald Armbrest (born about 1920). 4. Ralph Garfield
Armbrest was born May 1880 in Stark County, Ohio. He married Bertha A. KING about 1910. Bertha
was born about 1880 in Ohio. They had a daughter named Marguerite E.
