GENERAL INFORMATION

Hiram N. was born 3 December 1827 in PA and died  18 August 1886 in Clearfield County, PA.  He served in the Civil War in the 148th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company H as a Private.  Hiram enlisted in 1862 and was discharged with a disability on 26 June 1863.

According to a family history written by Vinnie Knappenberger in 1916, "one of the descendants, Hiram, married Emily HILL and settled in Saltsburg, Indiana County, PA where he became the father of six children."  However, this information about where Hiram settled relates to his son, U.S.G. (Grant) Knuppenburg and his daughter, Lucy Turner Byers, and his widow, Emily, who moved to that area after Hiram's death.   Hiram raised his family in Woodward Township, Clearfield County, PA according to the 1870 and 1880 census.   He is listed as a farmer and a laborer.   Hiram died in 1886 in Clearfield County and is buried in Henderson Cemetery in Clearfield County, PA.  His gravemarker shows his last name spelled as "KNUPPENBERG".

Hiram was married to Emily HILL, daughter of Joshua Hill and Alice Allen, in March 1853.  Emily was born 25 April 1837 in New York.  The census record indicates her parents were born in Connecticut but her death certificate indicates they were born in New York.  In the census of 1900, Emily is a widow living with her daughter Lodica "Lucy" Turner [a widow at that time], in Bigler Township, Clearfield County, PA.  Emily later moved to Saltsburg, Indiana County, PA area along with her daughter Lodica and her second husband, John F. Byers.  Emily died 3 June 1917 in Saltsburg, Indiana County, PA and is buried in Edgewood Cemetery, Saltsburg, PA  along with her daughter and her husband, John Byers.  From the 1900 census we learn that Hiram and Emily had 8 children of which 6 lived to adulthood.

CLEMEN(TINE) KNUPPENBURG (1870-1870)

Clemen(tine) was born and died in Clearfield County, PA in 1870 at the age of 2 months from measles.  Its possible that this child was a twin of Alice.  The records only show the name Clemen but we believe the full name is Clementine.

ALICE KNUPPENBURG (1870-?)

Alice was born August 1870 in Clearfield County, PA and died 1918 in Jefferson County, PA.  Alice married James M. TURNER, son of David Joshua Turner and Martha Catherine Cowfer, about 1888 in Clearfield County, PA.  James was born February 1855, worked as a carpenter, and died between 1900 and 1910.   The 1900 census shows this couple living in Gulich Township, Clearfield County, PA with one daughter from James' first marriage living with them: Elsie (born September 1881).  The 1910 census for Jefferson County shows Alice as a widow with her stepson, Samuel K. Turner (age 31), living in her household.   It seems Alice and James did not have children.

DELLA A. KNUPPENBURG (1873-?)

Della was born August 1873 in Clearfield County, PA.  She  married John H. BOWMAN who was born December 1866 in Spring Mills, Center County, PA.  In the 1900 census they are living in Gulich Township, Clearfield County, PA as a farming family.  In 1910 census, they are living in Center County, PA.  They seemingly only had one child.

1. Wilhemina Bowman was born March 1893 in Somerset County, PA.

CHILD KNUPPENBURG

Unknown child that died in infancy.  The 1900 census indicates that Emily Hill Knuppenburg was the mother of 8 children with 6 still living at that time.
